Public Service Worker I– Louisburg, Kansas

Public Service Worker

Location: Louisburg, KS 

Salary: $16.00 to $18.00 Hourly DOQ

Job Specifications

In this role the Public Service Worker will perform semi-skilled and skilled work maintaining the city utilities, streets, parks, and the water and wastewater plants. This employee should possess strong technical and mental aptitude, and effective communication, organizational, and public relation skills.

 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Public Works Supervisor

  • Must live within 25 minutes of reporting location.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Responsible for the general maintenance and repair of all public streets, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water system, natural gas system, public buildings, parks, and other facilities of public trust.
  • Inspects and repairs sewer lift stations, gas lines, and water lines.
  • Inspects, repairs, and cleans sewer mains.
  • Operates heavy equipment and excavates property.
  • Reads and replaces water and gas meters.
  • May perform some duties operating the water plant and sewer system.
  • Locates utility lines for Kansas One Call.
  • Mowing and grounds keeping duties for the city parks.
  • Maintains sewer system and collects samples to ensure effective treatment processes.
  • Performs water quality tests.
  • Maintains and repairs city streets and street signs.
  • Provides snow, ice, and debris removal as needed.
  • Knowledgeably operates all department equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability and willingness to stay current with advanced technology through employer provided training and/or formal classes.

Additional Responsibilities:  

  • Conducts leak surveys on gas lines and responds to gas leak calls.
  • Maintain department vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
  • Responsible for performing tree care and maintenance.
  • Uses any or all safety equipment provided to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintains a friendly and helpful working relationship with co-workers, citizens, and public officials.
  • Performs any and all other tasks as assigned


  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current driver's license required.
  • Minimum of one years of experience preferred.


  • Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of equipment maintenance, mechanics, and a working knowledge of welding, carpentry, and mathematics is preferred. This employee must be able to operate trucks, loaders, backhoes, mowers, and other department equipment. The ability to judge distances, to understand and anticipate problems, to follow safety procedures, and to interpret written instructions, maps, manuals, and schematics is required.
  • Problem Solving: Some independent problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with equipment malfunctions, adverse weather, and gas, water, and sewer leaks.
  • Decision Making: Some independent decision making is involved in this position. This employee makes decisions about performing necessary repairs, prioritizing daily assignments, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.
  • Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, supervisory personnel, and occasional contact with the City Administrator is expected.
  • Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, human blood and fluids, heavy machinery, excessive noise, work in confined spaces, heights, explosives, and all types of weather conditions is expected.
  • Physical Requirements: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, climbing, kneeling, stooping, talking, hearing, and the ability to operate equipment is frequently required in this position.
  • On-call Duties: Employee may be required to perform on-call duties during the week and on weekends.
